"Half hidden from the eye..." W. Wordsworth |

The fragility of the flower combined with great strength is a metaphor for the delicate side of ourselves. It emphasizes our link with all biological life on earth; it reminds us directly that like plants we ultimately spring from the earth. Flowers are usually thought as feminine in nature but many flowers also carry the male sexual organs of the plant. The flower's role in reproduction is to attract a pollinator and ensure the next generation's survival. I like the contrast between the muscularity of the model and the shapes of the flowers. Black and white film further abstracts and simplifies the image because the distraction of color is removed both from the skin and the bloom. So shape becomes the important factor. |
