The Galleries on this site are dedicated to the portrayal of the Male Physique through photography. I try to portray the body that has been polished and honed by hard work and clean living, is healthy and vigorous, and is motivated by positive aspirations. The beauty of a person is informed not only by muscular physicality but also by a healthful vitality and positive mental attitude. Man at his best has an innate goodness and beauty that transcends his body. I try to portray this masculine aesthetic in my photographs. I wish to distill into a picture the best and highest that a man can be.
My emphasis is on the artistic side of male photography and while I often do color work, my prime love is black and white photography. Removal of color allows shape, contrasts of light and darkness, texture and visual simplicity to dominate the work. B&W allows a great variety of expression and forces the viewer to focus on more abstract aspects of the photograph.
I like to photograph bodybuilders and athletes because they have developed their muscles and a muscular body has an aesthetic component that less well developed individuals do not possess. In ancient Greece and in Rome the nude male and female bodies were celebrated in all forms of art. Even in Sparta where modesty was a virtue the naked body was regarded as beautiful. Competitive bodybuilding as a sport emphasizes discipline and hard work as well as an awareness of bodily symmetry and proportion. Its devotees practice posing routines to display the physique to best advantage. I find these men are often comfortable in front of the camera's eye and enjoy playing up to it; "showing off" in a positive non arrogant manner.
Please visit my portfolio of galleries where there are pictures you can look at and download. In addition to portraits and contest pictures, I have abstract torsos and flower pictures, motion studies, infrared photography, platinum pictures and am trying my hand at digital work. There is even a biographical profile about me and of course the usual copyright warning and a page of links.
Click on the large eye graphic at the top of the page to navigate this site or visit my Table of Contents. Select the arm logo for some information about it or one of the small eye graphics to read about this well known Egyptian symbol. I am fascinated by the image of the eye and have put a quote on each page referring to vision in some way. You can read an article with my views on photography. There is a brief essay on Hercules associated with my pinhole series. If you are interested in purchasing a print, or wish to use an image in some way please send me an e mail at
image.physique@comcast.net. All the graphics on the site were made with Paint Shop Pro by JASC, an excellent graphic arts program which is easy to use and much cheaper than the Adobe program.
